Abstract

This research aims to find the similarities and differences between Indonesian and American song lyrics that contain LGBTQ issues and also to figure out how these issues are realized in the songs of each country. This research aims to find similarities and differences between Indonesian and American song lyrics that raise LGBTQ issues, as well as understand how these issues are realized in songs from each country. Five songs from each country were selected as the object of research. A descriptive qualitative approach is applied by using theories of comparative literature, gender studies, and song structure for solving the problem formulation of this research. Of the 20 data found, six data showed similar results and 14 data showed different results. The results showed three main similarities including the desire to have a partner, the expression of love, and the challenges faced in LGBTQ relationships. There are also two main differences, namely the variety of content and the use of language that refers to LGBTQ. Analysis of song structure reveals that Indonesian lyrics predominantly use the chorus, to emphasize that the main message of the song is how to live a homosexual relationship and its perception in Indonesia. Whereas American songs, where such relationships are more generally accepted, focus more on voicing equality for LGBTQ rights. So the issue is realized more in the verse section to support the main message of the song.
