Abstract
News is a form of written language used to convey and receive information with straight news being one type. Headlines, a critical component of news, play an essential role in presenting and contextualizing the essence of the news. Therefore, the writing of news headlines has to be acknowledged. However, the limited words count in headlines can lead to syntactic ambiguity, potentially resulting in readers’ misinterpretation. This study aims to identify syntactic ambiguities and their causes BBC’s straight news headlines focused on the Israel-Palestine war, published on October to December 2023 using a descriptive qualitative research. The analysis, grounded in Chomsky’s X-bar theory, identified 22 instances of syntactic ambiguity with varying interpretations. Based on Hirst’s causes of syntactic ambiguity theory, the ambiguities occurred due to 5 different causes: (1) prepositional phrase attachment that modifies a verb or a noun; (2) prepositional phrase attachment that modifies more than one noun (3) relative clause attachment; (4) prepositional phrase attachment that may attach to more than one verb; and (5) adverb attachment that placed to two verbs between clauses. In the context of Israel-Palestine war, which is a highly sensitive news topic, ambiguous headlines can contribute to the spread of misinformation. Although the differences may not drastically alter the overall message, but they are significance in shaping readers' understanding. Therefore, avoiding ambiguities in news headline is imperative.
