Abstract
Violation of the cooperative principle is a matter that often occurs in conversation. This actually happens to create politeness. The purpose of this study is to analyze the violation of the cooperative principle in Gordon Ramsay's polite utterances in MasterChef US Season 6. Gordon Ramsay is a renowned chef noted for his contentious remarks since he frequently employs swearing in his job as a judge in food competitions. This research utilized Brown and Levinson's politeness and Grice's cooperative principle. The findings demonstrated that 43 data of Ramsay's utterances were classified as the use of politeness strategies consisting of 11 bald on-record, 13 positive politeness, 8 negative politeness, and 11 off-record. Moreover, 23 data showed the violation of the cooperative principle, namely 8 violations of maxim of quantity, 5 violations of maxim of quality, 4 violations of maxim of relation, and 6 violations of maxim of manner. These illustrated that in the view of pragmatics, the violations of the cooperative principle do not always contain negative meanings. Ramsay's position as a judge demanded him to be forceful in his speech. At the same time, Ramsay recognized the need of maintaining personal relationships. The data above points out the positive politeness was most often used by Ramsay with the aim of expressing appreciation and recognition to create intimacy between interlocutors. In addition, the violations of quantity maxim in Ramsay's polite utterances proved that the quantity of information was not the focus to maintain social relations in conversation. Ramsay violated the maxim of relation less because he recognized that, as a judge, his words must be relevant to the context and situation, as well as be in agreement with the actual circumstances.
