Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the hierarchy of needs and the characterization process of the main character in a novel entitled Circe written by Madeline Miller. The theory of the hierarchy of needs is the main theory in this study. This study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the hierarchy of needs and the process of characterization of the main character. This study found that there are five characterization process in the main character, namely:
pessimistic to ambitious, insecure to brave, overthinking to strong, humble to cruel, and selfish to lovable. Then, in fulfilling the hierarchy of needs, the characterization process represented in the five level hierarchy of needs in the main character. The first needs is physiological needs that arise when Circe has to prepare all her own needs after being exiled. The second needs is safety needs that arise because Circe is exiled to Aiaia which makes her gets a lot of threats around her. The third needs is love and belonging needs which occurred because Circe feels she cannot obtain true love like other people. The fourth needs is esteemneeds
that arises because Circe, who is underestimated in her environment, wants to receive recognition and praises for her magical abilities. The last needs is selfactualization
that arises because Circe has a strong determination to find her true identity as a witch. The result of this study found that Circe as the main character is able to fulfill the five level hierarchy of needs which are met through five characterization process.
