Abstract

This study analyzes the beauty myth as depicted in Lisa See's Lady Tan's Circle of Women and examines how this beauty myth shaped the lives of women during the Ming Dynasty. The beauty myth refers to social standards that are constructed to regulate women's bodies, behavior, and identities, which often serve as a means of control that limits their autonomy. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of beauty myths that appear in the novel and explain how the main character, Tan Yunxian, resists these expectations while carrying out her responsibilities in her family and community. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with the novel as the main object of analysis. The theoretical framework used refers to The Beauty Myth (2002) by Naomi Wolf, focusing on five aspects relevant to the narrative: work, culture, religion, sex, and violence. James C. Scott's theory of Everyday Forms of Resistance is also used to examine the subtle forms of resistance carried out by the main character. The results of the analysis identified 31 pieces of data related to the category of beauty myths in the novel. Among these categories, cultural aspects emerged as the most dominant, as demonstrated through practices such as foot binding, demands for polite behavior, and strict social rules imposed on women. This study also found several data points that indicate forms of hidden resistance practiced by Tan Yunxian, including secret healing practices, support among women in the domestic sphere, and efforts to define self-worth beyond physical appearance. These findings show that the beauty myth functions as a long-standing mechanism of gender oppression, while hidden resistance becomes an important strategy for women to maintain agency in a restrictive patriarchal system.
