Abstract
The presupposition theory derived from pragmatic studies in this research plays a role in identifying the types of presupposition triggers that arise from the narrator’s utterances on the selected object. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to use pragmatic studies represented by presupposition theory to explore utterances that contain presupposition triggers. In addition, this study also connects Stephen C. Levinson’s theory of presupposition triggers and Roman Jakobson’s theory of language function. Furthermore, this study also has a qualitative research design framework that focuses on Miles and Huberman and applies qualitative descriptive methods. The data were taken from one of Jay Shetty’s podcasts, which invited Matthew Hussey to discuss the topic of romantic relationships. The total data obtained amounted to 130 data from the types of presupposition triggers that appeared, namely definite descriptions with 64 data, factive verbs with 11 data, implicative verbs with 2 data, change of state verbs with 22 data, iterative with 3 data points, temporal clauses with 8 data points, cleft sentences and comparisons & contrasts with 1 data point each, counterfactual conditionals with 6 data points, and the last type is questions with 12 data points. Subsequently, the functions of language and their types, namely the referential function with 125 data points, the emotive function with 4 data points, and the conative function with 1 data point, were identified in this overall study. The conclusion that can be drawn from the results of this study is that pragmatics can occur in communication that is connected with the situation and interaction between speakers and interlocutors or informants who receive the information conveyed. In terms of the theory of presupposition triggers applied here, the use of language can produce presuppositions in accordance with the background knowledge of the speaker in the podcast used as the object of research.
