Abstract
This study focuses on verbal humor in Max Amini's stand-up comedy performances and aims to analyze how Max deliberately flouts the four principles of Grice's cooperative principle to realize verbal humor. Specifically, this study highlights the flouting of the four Grice maxims namely, quality, quantity, relevance, and manner and their relationship with incongruity based on the Attardo’s General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH). The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods, with 74 findings analyzed descriptively to evaluate the frequency and type of maxim flouting. The results show that the maxim of quality was flouted 33 times, the maxim of quantity 32 times, the maxim of manner 7 times, and the maxim of relevance 2 times, making the maxim of quality the most frequently flouted. These flouts consistently created verbal humor characterized by incongruity, both resolved and activating background incongruity. This study concludes that the flouting carried out by Max Amini in a deliberate and structured manner is capable of realizing verbal humor.
