Abstract

The use of sentence structure in political speeches is to emphasize ideas and influence listeners. This study analyzes the syntactic structure of various types of sentences found in Prabowo Subianto's speech delivered at the G20 Summit in Brazil in 2024. The analysis focuses on two speeches, namely the speech delivered on November 18 discussing hunger and poverty, and the speech on November 19 discussing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and energy transition. Using a descriptive-qualitative method, this study applies Noam Chomsky’s Transformational Generative Grammar through tree diagrams to examine the sentence structure. Data collection was conducted by accessing official websites to obtain the speech texts, reading and coding the texts, categorizing sentence types, and analyzing them using syntactic tree diagrams. The results of the study show that both speeches contained all types of sentences, namely 50 simple sentences, 10 compound sentences, 6 complex sentences, and 1 compound-complex sentence. In addition, this study also identified and described the use of verbal phrases in all speeches. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the linguistic structure used in diplomatic discourse, particularly how sentences are formed from their smallest syntactic components into complete and meaningful expressions.
