Abstract
This investigation seeks to delineate the sentence patterns employed by Gideon and to juxtapose them with the patterns prevalent in Standard English. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were amassed from three of Gideon’s most prominent videos from 2024, selected due to their significant prevalence of Jamaican English on his platform: “Crazy WHITE JAMAICAN Pranks” (943 thousand views), “Crazy WHITE JAMAICAN Pranks Part 2” (149 thousand views), and “SIDEQUESTZ – KIZKO POP (Official Video)” (348 thousand views). The principal theoretical framework employed in this analysis is the sentence pattern theory posited by Quirk and Greenbaum (1973), which serves as a basis for examining the sentence pattern manifested in Gideon’s discourse. Supporting theoretical perspectives entailed the classification of sentence types as proposed by Rozakis (2003), which is utilized to identify the various categories of sentences used by Gideon, as well as the grammatical characteristics representative of Jamaican English, as outlined by Cassidy (2007). The analysis of 56 data points revealed seven sentence patterns based on Quirk and Greenbaum’s (1973) framework: S+V+A (7), S+V+O (25), S+V+C (9), S+V (3), S+V+O+A (6), S+V+O+C (1), S+V+O+O (5). Furthermore, the study identified all sentence types classified by Rozakis (2003), specifically simple sentences (22), compound sentences (8), complex sentences (15), and compound-complex sentences (11). The findings indicated that Gideon consistently utilized grammatical constructions that diverge from the norms of Standard English structure, especially regarding his employment of subjects, verbs, and objects. Notwithstanding these grammatical variances, the investigation revealed that all the sentence patterns he used are structurally aligned with the established patterns of Standard English when analyzed. This study makes a significant contribution to the development of linguistic studies, particularly in the field of syntax. Through its comprehensive analysis, it expands the comprehension of sentence pattern variations that manifest in English varieties evolving throughout the world, each possessing unique local features. By engaging in a direct comparison of these syntactic configurations with Standard English, the study clarifies the existing grammatical disparities, both regarding fundamental sentence patterns and the incorporation of supplementary elements such as adverbials. These findings not only enhance insights into syntactic diversity within English variants but also enrich academic discourse on how English adapts and evolves according to the cultural, social, and geographical contexts of its speakers.
