Abstract

In communication, everyone will try to make the information well received by the listener. Therefore, Grice encourages people not to ignore maxim to avoid misunderstanding in conversation. In fact, there is a lot of maxim flouting happening in the characters' speech in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. However, the characters who are flouting maxim can communicate without any misunderstanding happening. Sperber and Wilson argue that flouting maxim will not cause misunderstanding because the utterance produced by a person will always be the most relevant and appropriate to the ability and preference of the listener. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of flouting maxim used by the characters in the movie "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" and find out how flouting maxim does not cause misunderstanding based on Relevance Theory. A qualitative-descriptive method was applied in this study to achieve a detailed and in-depth research. The data of this study was collected from the transcript of the movie "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" movie transcripts and focused not only on the main character, but all characters. The results show that there are 58 maxim-violating utterances (including flouting maxim of quality, quantity, relation, and, manner). There are 20 data analyzed. Furthermore, the maxim violations that occur in the utterances are not communication failures, but strategic choices of the characters to achieve high cognitive effect and minimize the listeners' cognitive effort to understand the meaning. Thus, the speech that violates the maxim is in line with relevance theory and does not cause misunderstanding between the characters in the conversation.
