Abstract
This study conducts a syntactic analysis of the sentence structure in King Charles III's first Christmas speech delivered in 2022, using Andrew Radford's Tree Diagram Theory. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzes 23 sentences from the speech, focusing on sentence types, phrase structures, and grammatical patterns. The analysis reveals that complex sentences dominate the speech, consisting of one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses. These structures reflect the formal and ceremonial nature of the speech while fulfilling rhetorical purposes such as conveying unity, humility, and authority. Radford's Tree Diagram Theory effectively visualizes the hierarchical relationships between sentence components, providing a clear framework for understanding grammatical patterns in the speech. These findings highlight how syntactic choices in formal public communication not only convey information but also shape meaning, tradition, and the speaker's influence. This research contributes to the field of syntactic theory by demonstrating how formal grammatical structures are strategically employed in formal speeches during Christmas celebrations. The study highlights the interaction between language and power, offering insights into the linguistic strategies employed by King Charles III as he conveys the transfer of authority and the Christmas celebration.
