Abstract
Peculiarities sometimes occur in life, and from these peculiarities, life lessons are sometimes gained. This study analyzes the presence of magical realism and how it helps individuals move toward acceptance of the regrets they have made. The characteristics of magical realism, according to Wendy B. Faris in her book Ordinary Enchantments: Magical Realism and the Remystification of Narrative (2004), along with the concept of absurdity according to Albert Camus in his book The Myth of Sisyphus & Other Essays (1955), particularly in the section titled The Myth of Sisyphus, are analyzed in this study in the novel Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Cafe (2020) by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The results of the study show that the object fulfills the characteristics of magical realism, which can be seen from the 22 data discussed, consisting of 5 data on Irreducible Elements, 3 data on the Phenomenal World, 3 data on Unsettling Doubts, 5 data on Merging Realms, and 6 data on Disruptions of Time, Space, and Identity. In addition, the results of the study also show that the characteristics of magical realism, namely Irreducible Elements in the research object, can serve as a bridge for someone who wants to go through the process of moving from regret to acceptance, which is related to the concept of absurdity. This study concludes that the novel Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Cafe is a work of magical realism that fully meets the five characteristics according to Wendy B. Faris, and is related to absurdity in the process of moving from regret to acceptance. There are many things that humans desire, but sometimes the world is unable to provide what is desired. In the end, it takes courage to face challenges and move toward acceptance and happiness.
