Abstract
Every immigrant has difficulties adjusting to the prevailing culture and preserving their unique individuality. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyse how the characters in the film Yellow Rose 2019 embody the ideas of imitation, hybridity, ambivalence, third space, and the effects of discrimination on cultural identity. The postcolonial theory of Homi K. Bhabha is the concept used in this work. 16 data points from dialogue quotes and movie sequences that explain the idea of cultural identity dynamics make up the descriptive qualitative research methodology. There are three mimicry data, two hybridity data, five ambivalence data, three third space data and four discrimination data. This study comes to the conclusion that the immigrant characters in Yellow Rose employ dominant culture, especially music and lifestyle, to achieve impersonation. This process leads to the creation of ambivalence as internal tensions and feelings of alienation, as well as a sort of hybridity as interlocutors in identity disputes between the home and dominant cultures. Additionally, the construction of new identities creates a third space. The protagonists continue to experience interpersonal and systemic discrimination even after completing the cultural adaption process, illustrating the social constraints of the concept of immigrant identity. By analysing cultural distinctions and identification patterns throughout their diaspora, this work advances postcolonialism.
