Abstract
This study investigates the similarities and differences in the portrayal of female adolescent social interactions through four principal characters Cady Heron, Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Smith in Mark Waters’ Mean Girls (2004) and Samantha Jayne’s Mean Girls (2024). The analysis used Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek’s comparative literature framework (1998) and Robin Lakoff’s theory (1975). A qualitative descriptive methodology directed the data analysis. Data collection involved examining dialogue across 45 data from the 2004 film and 29 data from the 2024 film, totalling 74 data points. Among these, 31 data revealed similarities and 27 revealed differences, while the 29 data specifically focused on female representation. The findings indicated notable similarities and distinctions in character representations between the two films. Commonalities include the characters persistent manipulative traits, engagement in beauty standard competition, experiences of social pressure, and sustained character development. Divergences emerge through an enhanced awareness of self-identity for personal branding in shifting social landscapes. Additionally, the 2024 adaptation mirrors contemporary culture by depicting normalised social media engagement for gossip and trend-following, employing simplified linguistic forms, and incorporating musical components. Both films represent women as figures adhering to feminine communication norms while retaining agency to express social influence and strength. These results enrich the academic discourse surrounding popular literature and the progression of female representation within contemporary media.
