Abstract
Grief constitutes an inescapable phenomenon prevalent among all human beings. The research used the theoretical framework posited by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (2014),
which delineates the stages of grief into five distinct. Each individual will experience grief in the aftermath of losing significant relationships or the death of a cherished individual. The occurrence of death invariably elicits deep-seated feelings of grief among those affected. This study seeks to identify the expressions and manifestations of grief as portrayed by the main character in Marc Forster's 2023 cinematic phases: anger, denial, depression, bargaining, and acceptance. Moreover, the investigation incorporated Corless's (2014) construct of modes of expression, which is classified into four segments: verbal
response, nonverbal response, physical response, and physical activity. A qualitative descriptive methodology was employed to scrutinize data extracted from the film's script
and visual elements to ascertain the protagonist's journey through the stages of grief and his corresponding modes of expression. The results encompassed 20 discerned instances,
categorized as follows: five instances of denial, four of anger, two of bargaining, five of depression, and four of acceptance. In terms of modes of expression, the analysis revealed three instances of verbal response, sixteen of non-verbal response, and one of physical response. The study concludes that the protagonist in A Man Called Otto experiences all five stages of grief, with denial and depression emerging as the most prominent phases.
