Abstract
Beauty myths are always constructed and tied to women's bodies and lives, forming standards and expectations that often limit them. This research analyzes how fantasy
films about beauty, often inspired by fairy tales, can feature female characters who defy traditional beauty stereotypes through physical diversity, rejection of excessive focus on appearance, and emphasis on internal qualities. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the representation of beauty myths in The
School for Good and Evil movie based on Naomi Wolf's beauty myth theory in her book The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women (2002). This research also specifically identifies how female characters in the movie defy stereotypes related to beauty myths. The analysis found a total of 20 data, consisting of 10 data that represent five aspects beauty myth (beauty myth in work, beauty myth
in culture, beauty myth in religion, beauty myth in sex, and beauty myth in violence) and 10 data that show defiance to five aspects of beauty myth (beauty myth in work, beauty myth in culture, beauty myth in religion, beauty myth in sex, and beauty myth in violence) through female characters. This research concludes that there is a rejection by female characters in The School for Good and Evil movie of external
appearance expectations and a discovery of strength in their uniqueness. This not only reflects an effort to break down beauty stereotypes in fantasy narratives rooted in fairy tales but also implicitly resists the ever-evolving and often unrealistic beauty standards in contemporary society. Appreciation for beauty diversity empowers women to resist narrow stereotypes, recognizing that beauty emanates from internal qualities and individual uniqueness, thereby building self-confidence and rejecting pressure from unrealistic standards.
