Abstract

This study employs Critical Discourse Analysis to examine Rishi Sunak’s inauguration speech on October 25, 2022, which covered the Uk’s economic crisis. Through the use of Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar as a supplementary theory and Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis framework, this study seeks to reveal the inaugural speech’s sociocultural context at the micro, meso, and macro levels. Following a theoretical and interpretative assessment based on the inferences made from the previously examined materials, this study utilized a descriptive qualitative technique to characterize the data and sources gathered. Numerous linguistics features were identified by the research, such as 53 data for transitivity processes, 64 instances of personal pronouns and 17 data for modality usage. It was discovered that these language components represented certain ideological objectives incorporated into the speech. The three phases of critical discourse analysis demonstrated how Rishi Sunak’s speech served as a vehicle for achieving specific political objectives, particularly the emphasis on bolstering the populace’s economy in order to prevent a more severe economic catastrophe. The research findings also demonstrated that the speech’s discourse structure and vocabulary choices throughout the speech text demonstrated the deliberate use of language to express political goals.
