Abstract
This research endeavors to examine the application of discourse deixis within the verbal expressions of Belle, the central character in the film Beauty and the Beast (2017). The primary objective is to discern and categorize the types and functions of discourse deixis specifically anaphora and cataphora drawing upon Stephen C. Levinson's pragmatic framework. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were amassed through systematic observation and documentation of pertinent utterances during multiple screenings of the film. The analysis concentrates on how deictic words such as it, this, that, and these are used in discourse to establish meaning, coherence, and reference in communication. The analysis was exclusively focused on Belle's spoken dialogue. The findings indicate 29 instances of discourse deixis, which consist of 21 examples of anaphora and 8 of cataphora. Furthermore, all instances were accompanied by switch reference in referential form within cohesive discourse while reserving identical referents. Each data point was scrutinized in relation to the usage of deictic terms, the referents involved, and the contextual ties to preceding and subsequent segments of discourse. The results illustrate that discourse deixis operates not merely as a referential mechanism but also encapsulates Belle's emotions, attitudes, and implicit significances. Through these deictic expressions, viewers obtain a more profound understanding of conversational dynamics and the evolution of Belle's character throughout the narrative. Consequently, discourse deixis assumes a crucial role in shaping pragmatic meaning within the storytelling architecture of the film.
