Abstract

Narrative structure is the core that leaves an impression on the film because it presents a series of events while creating emotional impact, tension, and clarity of the story. The arrangement of the story in this narrative structure leads the audience to explore the storyline of the movie. The object of this research is an animated film entitled The Sea Beast by Chris William which was released in 2022. The qualitative method with Tzvetan Todorov's narrative structure approach supported by Ralf Dahrendorf's views on social conflict was used in the research. The results obtained 17 data showing equilibrium in the initial storyline, disruption and introduction of disruption in the middle storyline, and disruption that tries to be repaired and restore equilibrium in the final storyline. Based on the data obtained in the analysis of the middle storyline and its transition to the final storyline, there are 10 conflicts that cause disruption, as well as 1 consensus that resolves these conflicts and restores a more perfect equilibrium than the first equilibrium. Thus, the narrative structure of the film The Sea Beast is viewed through the journey of the main character in changing the balance of the relationship between humans and sea beasts, which was initially in a hostile situation, as well as the narrative in this film reflects social conflicts related to power dynamics, propaganda, and the struggle for truth to oppose the existing system.
