Abstract

Social deixis is crucial to comprehending communication dynamics because it influences how people perceive and engage with one another in addition to reflecting the social relationships between speakers, listeners, and observers. The varieties of social deixis in the webtoon are identified using Levinson‘s theory (1983), and the functions of social deixis are examined using Huang‘s theory (2014). The Omniscient Reader webtoon is the subject of the investigation. In order to examine the data, a descriptive qualitative method was employed. The 30 data that this study generated are separated into two categories: social deixis kinds and functions. Relational and absolute social deixis are the two categories into which the various forms of social deixis fall. Speakers and references (Referent Honorifics) have four data points; speakers and recipients (Addressee Honorifics) have six; speakers and observers (Bystander or Audience Honorifics) have one; and speakers and setting (level of formality or social activity) have three. These are all examples of relational social deixis. Furthermore, there are four data points for permitted recipients and five data points for authorized speakers in absolute social deixis. The investigation also yielded seven data. Three of these facts serve to demonstrate respect for strangers, three serve to assert group cohesion, and one serve to indicate a higher social position and the distance between the speaker and the recipient. Studying how titles or other forms of address are used to express respect, civility and social rank disparities between speakers and listeners is essential to understanding social deixis. When discussing titles or forms of address with the other person, context is crucial to understanding the intended meaning of social deixis and avoiding misunderstandings.
