Abstract

This research discusses the comparison of character and characterization in the 1955 and 2019 versions of Lady and the Tramp through a comparative literature approach. The main focus of this research is to identify the differences in character and characterization in the two movies and analyze the factors that cause these changes. These changes are examined using Zepetnek’s theory of Comparative Literature, Mario Klarer’s theory of character and characterization, and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, where data is collected through direct observation of the two movies and analyzed comparatively. The results show that there are 10 main differences in character and characterization, which reflect the shift in social and cultural values between 1955 and 2019. In addition, it was found that these changes were related to five types of representation, namely the representation of women, masculinity, race, gender, and power. One of the visible changes is that the baby and jock characters, which in the 1955 version were male characters, experienced gender changes to become female characters in the 2019 version. In addition, the Tramp character, who in the 1955 version was portrayed as a sympathetic figure and brave to fight, in the 2019 remake turned into a character who relies more on ingenuity and avoids physical combat. Lady’s character also undergoes a transformation from an innocent and timid figure to a more courageous one. The results of this study show that the 2019 Lady and the Tramp remake adjusts characters and characterization to better fit current social values, such as increased gender and racial inclusivity and changing power dynamics in the narrative. As such, this research contributes to comparative literature and movie studies, particularly in understanding how media represent identity and social change in the context of different times.
