Abstract
Dysphemism involves the use of harsh or negatively connoted language to describe a person or something. Studying dysphemism remains essential as it frequently appears in both face-to-face and digital interactions, often expressing emotions such as anger, frustration, or dislike. This research examines types and effects of dysphemism in YouTube comments on the video "Two Steps Ahead" by Nikocado
Avocado. Using a qualitative descriptive method. The study identifies dysphemistic expressions based on Allan and Burridge's (2006) framework. According to Allan
and Burridge (2006), dysphemism is a linguistic tool used to offend, insult, or degrade by replacing neutral expressions with more explicit or harsh forms, making their framework effective for analyzing both types and effects of dysphemism. The study analyzed 42 selected comments, revealing 25 dysphemistic words and 15 dysphemistic phrases, with words occurring 45 times and phrases 20 times. The
identified categories include 10 taboo expressions, 4 profanities, 3 animal-based comparisons, 3 dysphemistic epithets, 10 imprecations, 1 instance of-IST
dysphemism, and 9 derogatory terms. While primarily used for mockery and insult, dysphemism in some cases also conveys shock or, paradoxically, support. To examine its impact, interviews were conducted on the same 42 comments. The
findings suggest that dysphemism plays a role in normalizing offensive language, perpetuating trolling behaviors, shaping public opinions about content creators, and
increasing polarization in digital discourse.
