Abstract
Women have a specific style when communicating. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the features and functions of women's language in the movie To All The Boys: Always and Forever. This study applies Robin Lakoff's theory as the main theory for women's language features and Judy Pearson's theory as the supporting theory for the language function. The data taken focuses on the utterances of the main female character named Lara Jean Song Covey. This study employed descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data and describe the findings of the main character's speech. The result of this study shows that there are 125 data containing women's language features with 31 data described. Ten out of ten women's language features appear in the speech of Lara Jean, the main female character, including lexical hedges or fillers, tag question, empty adjective, rising intonation on declarative, precise color term, intensifier, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite form, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. From all the features found, lexical hedges and filler features are the most frequently used women's language features by Lara Jean. Meanwhile, five of the five types of functions of women's language features are also used by the main female character. These functions are to express uncertainty, to get responses, to soften an utterance, to start discussion, and to express feeling. The most dominant function of women's language features in this movie is to express uncertainty. This study highlights the offering insights into how linguistic patterns reinforce or challenge gender stereotypes. The movie was chosen for its portrayal of a modern young woman navigating relationships and personal growth, making Lara Jean's speech relevant to contemporary discussions on gender and language. The study concludes that Lara Jean is depicted as an insecure character, with her rejection from her dream university being a major factor contributing to her self-doubt.
