Abstract
This study aims to explore the similarities and differences in the portrayal of the main character development, Roz, in the novel "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown released in 2016 and its 2024 film adaptation. The purpose of this research is to enhance the understanding of character adaptation in comparative literature. Utilizing Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek's theory of comparative literature and Linda Hutcheon's theory of adaptation, along with Creswell's qualitative research design framework, the study employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection involved analysing dialogue and narrative elements across 33 data points from both the novel and the film. The total data from 33 data points are 25 similarities, 33 differences, 9 reductions, and 23 additions. The results highlight significant similarities and differences in Roz's characterization, setting, and plot development across the two mediums. The study concludes that while Roz's core characteristics such as her maternal instincts and integration are maintained, the adaptation introduces variations that reflect cinematic storytelling techniques. the film adaptation introduces cinematic techniques that reshape her journey. For instance, the novel relies heavily on descriptive prose and internal monologues to delve into Roz's emotional and psychological growth, while the film uses visual cues, body language, and voice acting to convey her transformation. The study concludes that these differences underscore the unique narrative tools employed in literature and film, contributing valuable insights into the processes of adaptation. Ultimately, this research provides a foundation for future studies in the field of comparative literature and adaptation studies. By examining the nuances of Roz's character development, this study emphasizes the importance of medium-specific techniques in shaping audience perception and emotional connection. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of adaptation processes in literature and film, offering valuable insights for scholars and researchers in the field of adaptation studies.
