Abstract

Literary studies is a critical examination of how stories and characters that symbolize social, cultural, and gender issues are portrayed in media, including movies. Using Betty Friedan's liberal feminist theory from The Feminine Mystique, this study attempts to examine Barbie the Movie 2023. This study's primary goal is to comprehend how the movie's characters both embody and subvert conventional gender role stereotypes, as well as to pinpoint ways in which people defy societal expectations surrounding gender roles. This study examines how gender stereotypes and modes of resistance are portrayed in the movie using a descriptive qualitative methodology. The portrayal of gender stereotypes in the movie was the first of the study's two primary areas, as determined by seven data points-four Barbie stereotypes, two Ken stereotypes, and one Sasha stereotype. The second type of resistance to gender role norms was examined using eight data points, including two that demonstrated Ken's character development, one that dealt with Gloria's speech, and five that dealt with Barbie's existential crisis. According to the study's findings, Barbie the Movie 2023 features characters who balance gender equality and individual freedom in addition to criticizing conventional gender stereotypes. This study, which takes a liberal feminism, emphasizes how the movie supports women's autonomy in defining their identities, which is consistent with Friedan's criticism of the constraints placed on them by societal gender standards. As a result, this study offers a fresh viewpoint on how the media might combat gender stereotypes and how feminist theory can be applied to comprehend and critique gender-related social constructions in the contemporary world.
