Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and functions of implicature in imperative utterances in the film Free Guy. Free Guy is a movie directed by Shawn Levy which was released in 2021. The method in this research is qualitative description method. This research uses Grice's theory to find the types of implicature and Sarle's theory to analyze the function of implicature.The results of this study obtained 18 data that showed the types and functions of
implicature.It consists of 1 conventional implicature data and 17 conversational implicature data. The type of conversational implicature is divided into two more
types, namely 3 data of general conversational implicature and 14 data of specific conversational implicature. There are three maxim violations found, including 9 violations of the maxim of manner, 6 violations of the maxim of relevance and 2 violations of the maxim of quantity. Then, four implicature functions according to Searle (1979) were found consisting of 1 Assertive data, 13 Directive data, 3 Expressive data, and 1 Commissive data. This study found that in the movie Free Guy the most dominant type of implicature is conversational implicature, which
often appears due to its focus on context-dependent conversations, especially utterances related to the game world, while the least common type of implicature is conventional implicature. The most frequent function of implicature is the directive function, as it is closely related to imperative utterances that aim to influence the interlocutor's actions. This study also shows that implicature softens imperative utterances, making them more polite and portraying speakers' emotions more deeply.
