Abstract

The concept of existentialist feminism rooted in the belief that women possess the right to transcend societal expectations through their existential struggles. This ideology not only impacts real-world experiences but is also reflected and represented in literary works as a medium for communicating this ideas, both explicitly and implicitly. This study examines the existentialist struggles of female characters in Kevin Emerson’s novel Last Day on Mars, employing Simone De Beauvoir’s feminist framework from her seminal work, The Second Sex. The study identifies 38 data points across five dimensions of existentialist feminism: 7 related to intellectual and creative pursuits, 4 related to relationships and sexuality, 7 related to social and political participation, 9 related to roles in motherhood and family, and 11 related to personal growth and individual freedom. The analysis highlights that all the female characters in the novel demonstrate their struggles to assert their existential rights.
