Abstract
Gender stereotypes are phenomena observable not only in literature and film but also in animated series. This study scrutinizes the occurrence of gender stereotypes and gender fluidity in the animated series The Loud House, with the goal of pinpointing the gender stereotypes, clarifying gender performances linked to gender performativity displayed by the characters, and understanding how they portray gender fluidity. This study employs Judith Butler’s Gender Performativity Theory. The interaction between the main character, Lincoln, and his eleven sisters in the animated series provided the data. This study is descriptive qualitative research. It was undertaken to analyze gender stereotypes and gender fluidity phenomena in the animated series. The findings showed that there are 10 gender stereotypes. Among the ten gender stereotypes, four are masculine and six are feminine, indicating that feminine stereotypes are predominant. On the other hand, there are three gender fluidities, which consist of two masculine performances and one feminine performance. The results show that when there is a sexual imbalance, the dominant female will take on the role that the male usually plays. In conclusion, the interaction of characters in The Loud House illustrates gender stereotypes and fluidity through Butler’s theory, providing a comprehensive context for the examples of masculine and feminine performance. Despite the nature of the animated series preventing direct comparison to real life, these findings indicate the potential relevance of Butler’s theory in real-world scenarios.
