Abstract

The unique communication styles of men and women are evident in their differing speaking styles. This study explored the distinct communication styles of male and female characters in Enola Holmes through an analysis of genderlect styles based on Deborah Tannen's Genderlect Theory. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, the research examined both the communication patterns and the factors shaping these styles in the characters. The findings identified 27 instances of genderlect styles, with 14 instances of rapport talk predominantly used by Enola Holmes in private talk, asking questions, listening, telling stories, and conflict. In contrast, 13 instances of report talk were associated with Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes. Mycroft employed report talk in public speaking, asking questions, listening, telling stories, and conflict while Sherlock used report talk primarily in asking questions, listening, and conflict. Enola's dominant use of rapport talk is shaped by her internal socialization with her mother, emphasizing relationships and personal connections. Cultural norms and individual experiences influenced Mycroft and Sherlock's report talk, which focused on information exchanged and status. These findings highlight the influence of gender and social factors on communication in literary works.
