Abstract
Slang is used by female characters to express identity, build social relationships, and strengthen group dynamics. This study aims to determine the types and functions of slang used by female characters. The theoretical foundation used in the analysis is based on Allan and Burridge's theory of 5 types and 7 functions of slang. The object of this research is the American musical movie "Mean Girls" (2024). The data is taken from the utterances of female characters in the movie. This research is a qualitative research with descriptive analysis method to analyze the utterances produced by 8 female characters in this film. The results showed that there were 40 data included in the category of slang words, with 33 data described in detail. All five types of slang are used by the female characters with seven functions indicating their use by the 8 characters. The most frequently used slang type is fresh and creative, while acronym and clipping are rarely used. The most frequently used function of slang is to express anger, while the least frequently used function is to address, form intimate atmosphere and to initiate relax conversation. This study concludes that the use of slang by female characters in this movie has a complex and diverse function, which shows that slang not only functions as a means of communication, but also as a reflection of social status, power, and interpersonal relationships among the characters.
