Abstract

Comparative literature focuses on comparing two or more literary works such as movies or novels. This study examines two movies titled The Little Women, produced in 2018 by Clare Niederpruem and in 2019 by Greta Grewig. The study
applies the comparative literature theory of Totosy de Zepetnek. The research aims to analyze the character development of the two central female characters, Jo and
Amy, in both movies. A descriptive-qualitative method was employed for data analysis, yielding 19 comparison points between the two movies. The findings reveal both similarities and differences in the characterization of Jo and Amy across the two versions, shaping the broader representation of women in the movies. In TLW 2018 and TLW 2019, the female characters are characterized with consistent, inconsistent, confident, insecure, and assertive. While both movies end with similar happy endings, the plot structure is slightly different. In both movies, Jo publishes her work, opens a school, and finds love, while Amy wins Laurie’s love and reconciles with Jo. However, the 2018 version provides less focus on Amy’s perspective than the 2019 version. The comparison highlights how language and
culture influence the portrayal of female characters in these adaptions.
