Abstract

Semiotics are signs that produce meaning in them. In the literary, the presence of semiotics can also be a topic of discussion. The Barbie Movie is characterized by a prominent feminist message. Greta Gerwig directed the Barbie movie, which hit theaters in 2023. This movie explores the topic of feminism by prominently featuring female characters in the bulk of the primary roles. This study aims to observe, understand, and describe the representation of women in the Barbie movie. This research employed the descriptive qualitative method, drawing on Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis to examine the meanings of donotative and connotative. The research samples are scenes that represent women and use Barthes’s semiotics analysis method. There are four categorization, including: (1) independent women; (2) women as leaders; (3) brave women; and (4) Intelligent women. According to the performed study, the researcher concludes that the Barbie movie shows signs that represent brave, intelligent, independent, and leader women in the public sphere. Patriarchal culture no longer depicts women as inferior individuals under oppression. Furthermore, women have the freedom to pursue any desired path, irrespective of their racial or skin color background. Women can also stand on their own without male domination or assistance.
