Abstract

This research is an analysis of the magical realism elements in Rachel Heng's novel The Great Reclamation. This research aims to identify and analyze the five characteristics of magical realism proposed by Wendy B. Faris, namely irreducible elements, phenomenal world, unsettling doubts, merging realms, and disruptions of time, space, and identity. In addition, this research also explores the socio-cultural context behind the emergence of magical realism in the novel, which is set in Singapore during a time of significant social and political change. The results showed that all five elements of magical realism were found in the novel. The irreducible elements are the most dominant, reflecting the acceptance of magical events as an integral part of the characters' reality. The phenomenal world is represented through detailed descriptions of real-world locations and historical events, while unsettling doubts arise from the conflict between the rational and the supernatural. The merging realms and the disruption of time, space, and identity further enhance the magical realism aesthetic. The magical elements serve as metaphors for the characters' struggles with identity, loss, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. In conclusion, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of magical realism in literature and its connection to socio-cultural contexts.
