Abstract

"Moxie" is a 2021 American teen drama film directed by Amy Poehler, adapted from the novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu. Produced by Netflix, the movie tells the story of a teenage girl named Vivian who, inspired by her mother's history of activism, starts a feminist movement at her conservative school. In the process, she cultivates courage, solidarity and gender equality to fight injustice in her school. The movie depicts Vivian's personal journey in finding her voice and fighting oppressive norms, while touching on important issues such as sexual harassment, gender stereotypes, and inequality in education. This research examines how representations of feminism are shown in the movie. There are two main focuses in this study: Vivian's character development and the representation of liberal feminism in the movie. This analysis uses Gordon Vessel and William Huitt's theory of character development and Rosemary Putnam Tong's theory of liberal feminism. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method that presents information in the form of text or transcripts from the movie as the object of research. The results show that Vivian's character development is influenced by three factors: external, internal, and interactional. In addition, there are four rights that Vivian fights for based on the theory of liberal feminism, namely educational equality, freedom equality, freedom equality, and freedom equality.
