Abstract

Semantics involves the exploration of meaning associated with words, phrases, or sentences. This study selected a speech to determine various types of meaning due to the inherent power of speeches to convey individual’s thought. The aim of this study is to analyze the types of associative meaning and the language functions within Oprah Winfrey’s commencement speech to the class of 2020. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative research methodology, this study examines the utterances including words, phrases, and sentences spoken by Oprah Winfrey as the speaker of the speech. This study uses Geoffrey Leech’s (1981) theory of associative meaning and Roman Jakobson’s (1987) theory of language function, examining their presence and correlation within the speech. The analysis encompasses thirty-six data points, revealing the presence of all types of associative meaning in the data: connotative meaning with four data, social meaning with one data, affective meaning with nine data, reflected meaning with seven data, and collocative meaning with fifteen data. The findings indicate that Winfrey’s commencement speech aims to deliver encouragement, inspiration, motivation, and persuasion to the graduates. Additionally, this study identifies six language functions: referential function with fifteen data, emotive function with eight data, conative function with seven data, phatic function with one data, metalinguistic function with two data, and poetic function with six data. The types of associative meaning identified in Winfrey’s speech enhance the language function, delivering a powerful message that deeply resonates with and motivates the class of 2020 graduates.
