Abstract
Orientalism, as conceptualized by Edward Said, elaborates on the Western perspective and methodology used to comprehend, depict, and expert control over the East or Eastern world. Orientalism often views the East as exotic, mystical, inferior, and dependant on the West. The Western view of the East is not necessarily true and creates false assumptions about the East. Stereotypes refer to these incorrect assumptions. Scene and dialogues in the film The Covenant also exhibit orientalism. This research aims to analyze how stereotypes can impact the East and the West in the film The Covenant. This research employs the descriptive qualitative method, gathering data through both documentation and observation. The data consist of fragments of sequence and dialogues involving the main characters in the film, which have been classified as exhibiting orientalist Stereotypes. The major characters of the film The Covenant perfomed 25 data on Western and Eastern stereotypes. The Covenant presents a variety of character stereotypes, such as five superior stereotypes, two technologically advanced stereotypes, two inferior stereotypes, two barbarous stereotypes, three dependant stereotypes, four indebted stereotypes, four willingness to help otherss, and three disobedient stereotypes. The findings on this study indicate the ceritain stereotypes align with Edward Said’s perspective on orientalism. However, as the film The Covenant progresses, the protagonis endeavors to dismantle the cliches.
