Abstract

In the current digital age, various facets of life, including social progress, culture, and science, are rapidly developing. This influence extends to English literature, shaping its objects. Poetry and novels were the only literary objects available historically. However, the scope of literary objects has expanded to include dramas, movies, and games. The scope of literary analysis in movies and games has expanded to include a wide range of subjects, such as TV shows and video game adaptations, which are readily available and accessible over the internet. This research aims to explain the plot differences in the movie and video game adaptations of The Last of Us, which focuses on the story of Joel Miller and Ellie’s character’s journey in the world after the Cordyceps fungus outbreak. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the alterations in the narrative of the film and video game by examining the dialogue text and scenes. This study utilizes the theory of comparative literature using Henry Remak’s methodology, Eneste notion of ecranization and Freytag’s pyramid plot method. The data collection method was done by watching movies and playing video games side by side. The result revealed that 20 identification data points could accurately describe plot differences and their impact on the overall narrative of The Last of Us. The analysis of plot differences reveals that movie and video games exhibit substantial disparities that can impact the plotlines, despite the movie adaptation drawing inspiration from the original game script. The findings are anticipated to offer novel insights and valuable knowledge for readers and users of comparative literature theory, specifically pertaining to plot comparison and the influence of plot alterations. Additionally, it will aid other researchers in conducting comparative literary analysis by utilizing films and games as research subjects.
