Abstract

A literary work's message becomes extremely significant and applicable to daily life when figurative language is employed in it. Simile is a type of figurative language that draws a comparison between two things based on their shared qualities or features. This research tries to identify the many forms of smiles and their significance in the story line of the movie Avatar: The Way of Water This research used a qualitative rescarch method by using XJ Kennedy's (1995) theory to find the types of similes and Geoffrey Leech's (1981) theory to determine the meaning contained in the similes. This study identified two types of similes in the script of the movie Avatar The Way of Water, namely, 15 data and as 3 data The most dominant meaning in both types of similes is conceptual meaning 18 data and connotative meaning 18 data followed by affective meaning 10 data, social meaning 5 data and thematic meaning I data In this study, the type of simile that is often used in the script of the movie Avatar: The Way of Water is like. Like and as have the same function in a simile However, the use of like is most dominant where there are 15 data. The term like in a simile allows for greater flexibihty. enabling the comparison of two distinct items that share similar qualities. The script of Avatar: The Way of Water prominently features a simile that characterizes Spider in the movie.
