Abstract

Today, abusive relationships such as same-sex couples have specific symbols that they use as their identity. These symbols are created by their community. We can directly see and analyze the symbols of their community through a movie. One of them is the gay movie studied in this research, “Boy Meets Boy”. This research uses a qualitative method that is analyzed using Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory. This research aims to identify or find gay symbols by using the formulation of Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory. This research obtained 3 gay symbols from 18 existing data. The symbols obtained are the results of Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis with three meanings, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. Denotation is the real (visual) reading of meaning. Connotation is a subjective reading of meaning, while myth is the relationship between meaning and symptoms or phenomena that many people believe in. The data is obtained from non-verbal communication scenes shown by gay couples in the movie “Boy Meets Boy”. Non-verbal communication in this movie includes physical touch, lip kissing, hair kissing, stealing glances, glancing or staring, and intercourse. The implications of the symbols basically mean nothing if we do not recognize the meaning of the symbols. These symbols are closely related to the LGBTQ+ community. It is hoped that this research can provide knowledge to find out more about this community.
