Abstract

Migrant Communities is groups of individual who are migrate and sittle in a new place. The number of migrant communities in an area can create a characteristic and social capital. The characteristic can create uniqueness and social capital can create a harmony in society. The purpose of this research is to determine the characteristic and to analyze social capital of migrant communities at Kampung Jawa and Sidodadi Neighborhood.The theory used in this research is capital social theory by Pierre Bourdieu. Capital social is all of actual and virtualized resources that have been institutionalized. Social capital has three elements; they are norms, values, and beliefs. Norm is set of rules that must be obeyed, value is an idea which is considered true and a belief is mutual trust. The type and the approach used in this research were descriptive and qualitative. The source of data used primary and secondary data. The data collecting technique used was observation, interview, and documentation. The total of informant in this research was 17 people that were determined with purposive sampling technique.The results of conducted research are; first, migrant communities at Kampung Jawa and Sidodadi Neighborhood have unique characteristics. The uniqness has the similarity. The characteristic similarity of migrant communities in both neighbourhoods is the similarity of tribe, the similarity of occupational, friendly, religious and unified. The characteristics have role on the harmony of migrant communities at Kampung Jawa and Sidodadi Neighborhood, thought it is not significant. Second, migrant communities at Kampung Jawa and Sidodadi Neighborhood have social capital. The social capital consists of friendly, mutual cooperation, tolerance, system of norm, and beliefs. Capital social at both of neighbourhood have similarity and important role for migrant communities at KampungJawa and SidodadiNeighborhood in creating harmony.
